‘We’re not going to quit.’ In western Ukraine, strength and resilience endure

Valentina Horohova looked for wildflowers with 2-year-old Caroline Sliptsova in Hylbochok, Ukraine. Horohova fled from her home in the Donetsk region with her granddaughter and great-granddaughter. Now they live in a former summer camp in western Ukraine, a place for recovery from the traumas of war.

The Boston Globe spent eight days in western Ukraine speaking with people about how they’re coping amid the ongoing war and what’s next. This is the second in a series of dispatches from a nation under siege.
