Chance takes off from Silva’s outstretched gloved arm in search of food. Chance is a male juvenile red-tailed hawk that he keeps in a converted backyard shed called a mews. The mews has a large perch with a tray of water and open ventilation. Silva takes the hawk hunting for small animals like rodents, rabbits and snakes in the woods behind his home. Chance was trained by Silva to fly back to his gloved hand. If Chance sees an animal for food, it will fly down and capture it and eat it on the spot. Silva expects to keep Chance until he feels comfortable to release him back into the wild which he says could be in two or three more years. Juvenile hawks do not have a good survival rate in the wild. There are about 60 permitted falconers in Massachusetts and master falconers can own up to five birds of prey.
